![]() ![]() It’s a win-win-win for both studios as well as diehard Spider-Man fans. (When Peter asks Doctor Strange to cast a spell to make everyone forget that he’s Spider-Man, it’s very on-brand for an angsty teenager-why the good doctor agrees to this very dumb idea is beyond understanding.) As for what Sony gets out of this arrangement, the studio essentially re-creates the magic of its animated, Oscar-winning Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse-one of the best superhero films of all time-as a live-action blockbuster. ![]() The MCU’s Phase 4 is diving into all the mind-bending potential of the multiverse, and Peter’s role in the larger series is no exception. That No Way Home can throw all these characters into one film may seem contrived, but to both Sony’s and the MCU’s credit, the crossover event actually makes some sense. It’s Time to Recognize the Kinetic Greatness of Andrew Garfield The ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ Exit Survey Willem Dafoe’s Green Goblin Is the Centerpiece of ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ But No Way Home’s callbacks don’t end with the Spidey villains of yore, as the movie-massive spoiler alert, though who didn’t see this coming?-also revives Maguire’s and Garfield’s Spider-Men ahead of its action-packed, star-studded climax. Together, these villains make up five of the Sinister Six-Venom rounds out the group, but the latest version of the symbiote has more pressing concerns, like falling madly in love with its human host. With the help of Doctor Strange, the film unleashes the multiverse, which is another way of saying Sony gets to re-live its greatest hits, bringing back Dafoe’s Green Goblin, Molina’s Doc Ock, and Thomas Haden Church’s Sandman from the Raimi trilogy, as well as Jamie Foxx’s Electro and Rhys Ifans’s Lizard from The Amazing Spider-Man series. Why does this matter for the Tom Holland iteration of the character? Well, anyone with an internet connection should be aware of the intent behind the MCU’s latest Spider-Man entry, No Way Home. Without the plaudits or fanfare of Raimi’s trilogy to begin with, the Garfield-led series was canceled before it could reach a third film. Yet the studio didn’t learn its lesson: After rebooting the Spidey IP with Andrew Garfield taking over as Peter, the franchise once again threw in several villains-Electro, Green Goblin, and Rhino-in 2014’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Raimi has been candid about how trying to raise the stakes “doomed” Spider-Man 3, which wasn’t helped by Sony’s reported push for Venom to be included in the movie against the filmmaker’s wishes. Before Tom Holland’s Peter Parker came under the wing of the Marvel Cinematic Universe as part of an ongoing partnership with Sony Pictures-which still has rights to the character-Sony had two stabs at a Spider-Man franchise, and both fell apart in similar fashion. Yet when it comes to Spider-Man movies, going bigger has historically bit the character-and not in the “radioactive spider imbuing a teenager with cool powers” type of way. (And, frankly, proved that James “Ocean Master” Cameron is in a blockbuster league of his own.) Nevertheless, that approach has come to define superhero movies this century, practically by design-you can’t get to The Avengers without first laying the foundations of Iron Man, Thor, and Captain America: The First Avenger. But while there have been some worthy sequels in this mold, bigger doesn’t necessarily mean better-the likes of Aliens and Terminator 2: Judgment Day are the exception rather than the rule. One of the biggest unwritten rules in Hollywood is that the best way for a sequel to live up to its predecessor is by doing more of everything.

![]() But so much time has passed since Black Mesa development started, it no longer looks modern. Some additions here were so satisfying, I don't want to spoil them even though they're not technically canon.īefore I got to Xen, though, Black Mesa often felt like an herculean effort to make an old game look modern. It is mostly here, when Crowbar Collective throws away the script and writes its own destiny, that the spirit and creativity of the modding community shines the most. It has entirely new environments, enemy types, and even story beats that gently flesh out the world's fiction with the foreknowledge of what's revealed in Half-Life 2. The Xen section took a particularly long time to finish, and now that I've played it it's easy to see why: Crowbar Collective took that part of Half-Life, largely considered its weakest act, more or less put the entire thing in the garbage, and started over from scratch. Different parts of it have been playable for years, but last week Black Mesa's developer Crowbar Collective started beta testing the 1.0 release of the game, meaning the entire thing is playable, beginning to end, including the game's last chapter, Xen, which takes place on an alien world. It's not just a bunch of high resolution textures, but a meticulous recreation of a long, complex, and beloved game in a more recent engine, with a few embellishments.īlack Mesa's ambitions were so exciting when I first saw a trailer for it in the 2000s that I decided I wouldn't play it until the entire thing was finished. It's more like Gus Van Sant's shot-for-shot 1998 remake of Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho than the cleaned-up and "digitally remastered" release of Star Wars. It recreates the entirety of Half-Life in Half-Life 2's Source engine. But the scope of Black Mesa would have been an undertaking for any team. This is comparing apples and oranges a bit since there's a big difference between working in a well-funded, dedicated development team and a team of initially unpaid fans who are chipping away at a dream project while working day jobs. That's 16 years of development for a remake of a game that took only two years to develop. It's been in development in one form or another since shortly after the release of Half Life 2 in 2004. The new suddenly stands out like a sore thumb, forcing me to recognize the difference between Black Mesa's hobbyist origins and Half-Life's now canonical, genre-defining level design.īlack Mesa's frequent overextensions don't detract from it as one of the most ambitious mods in the history of video games. When it fails like this, Black Mesa brings the whole audacious experiment crashing down. But too often, like the battle at the missile silo, Black Mesa's additions bite off more than they can chew, adding too many enemies, new art assets, and dramatic music in an attempt to turn what was once a simple, memorable room or beat into an action set piece. New or overhauled spaces are woven seamlessly into the original, and capture its spirit of sci-fi, corporate dread so perfectly, I had to check videos of Half-Life on YouTube to check if they were actually new. Some of them are so subtle, they're hard to notice. In the original Half-Life, I could end this fight with one well placed grenade, but here, in the lovingly crafted fan-made remake called Black Mesa, it is a long and drawn-out fight, where I scramble from cover to cover, reload, and pick off not-so-clever enemies until the path is clear.īlack Mesa is full of these embellishments on the original Half-Life. What was once a simple rectangular space with a missile silo lid at its center is now a sprawling arena filled with boxes, military equipment, and soldiers running around shooting me. It has definitely aged very, very well, but so many games have taken so much from it that it probably won't feel particularly special if it's your first time through.I turn the corner, as I have many times before, but I don't find what I expect. It's held in such high regard because it was an incredible game for its time. I don't necessarily think playing 1 or Black Mesa will add a ton of value to the second game.ĮDIT: A word of warning: Half-Life 2 was incredibly impressive when it came out but a lot of people who play it now express an opinion of "eh, it was all right". Yes, you can play 2 and still enjoy it greatly without having played 1. Hell, even some names (Kleiner, Vance, Breen) aren't even mentioned in Half-Life 1 despite those characters being integral to the plot of 2. The two games aren't terribly related in terms of story beyond some names and a handful of references here and there. ![]() Personally, I played Half-Life 2 long before I played the first game and I loved it. I haven't played Black Mesa but it can't be horribly different from the first game, can it? For this, we use a different IP address for the magic packet to reach the PC than the main PC IP address (choose an IP address not used on the PC subnet). The main problem is to get the magic packet forwarded as a broadcast once routed to get it recognized by the PC NIC. This is the particular case which is discussed here. In some cases, a unicast destination IP can be used which makes the routing straight forward, however most generally the destination MAC of the magic packet must be a broadcast which causes a routing problem. There are different types of Magic Packets that can be used depending on the NIC manufacturer and driver. This requires the PC network interface and BIOS to support WOL. They’re not bad as a side distraction from the main story though, and they’re certainly more replayable. The biggest reward for playing the other modes is more vehicles to use in the story mode. This version of Zombie Driver, as with all others before it, is completely sans a multiplayer option. There are other modes apart from the story available, like a survival mode fighting against an endless horde and a race mode against other vehicles, and when I first saw these I thought ‘oh, finally, some multiplayer, that’ll get me out of this repetition’. The story tries to throw some unearned twists into its fairly rote zombie-conspiracy story but it’s only ever delivered by very subpar voice acting at the beginning and end of a mission, so it’s a task to be engaged by it. It’s not that surprising on reflection, given that it’s the core gameplay, but it left me feeling weary after I saved six engineers, completed the mission, and then immediately had to go save six naval officers. Some missions will throw a boss your way, which means you’ll fire more at one enemy (although all the bosses in the game are effectively the same), and very infrequently you’ll get to drive a tank which is… the same gameplay, but cooler feeling. Some missions frame it as saving some people, which means you’ll stop on a circle when an area is clear. Drive here, clear this area, drive back, repeat. That’s largely to blame on the fact that all the missions are almost exactly the same. It’s just that it’s fun for about two missions at a time. It’s a satisfying feeling, driving through the streets and side-swiping a big crowd of zombies to death. Controls and tutorials are clear, and it’s definitely of the ‘easy to learn, hard to master’ school of games – handbrake turns and nitro boosting take a while to get used to but are essential for maximising the number of zombies crushed under your wheels in the smallest time possible. ![]() All that with no performance issues to speak of, which is nice. If hunting zombies is your thing there are some huge body counts in these missions. The hordes are surprisingly big and surprisingly dense – you’ll often have over a hundred enemies on screen at once, and as you ram and shoot and burn them you’ll be rewarded with some satisfying particle and gore effects. The story mode sees you taking on bite-sized missions of about 5 – 10 minutes each, having you heading out from a central base to fight a horde of zombies in your car, using one of four weapons picked up on the road. I’ll get positive for a moment to start though: what Zombie Driver does, it does well enough. Sadly, this is one title that would have been fine staying in its decade-old grave. Originally Zombie Driver, released for Android phones in 2009, and then Zombie Driver HD on nearly every console from the last ten years, we now get the experience of seeing it shamble back to its portable-esque roots on the Switch. Zombie Driver: Immortal Edition is one of the latest in a long line of Switch ports. |
